Subject: Jirik Sod Farms Buff-breasted/ 140th St. Marsh Sora and chicks

Thanks to Connie Brunell and other birders, I had great looks at two
Buff-breasted Sandpipers about 9:45 am today. It's a life bird for me. The
birds were in the same plowed sod farm previously posted (on Blaine Avenue,
south of Dakota 66, second plowed field on the west side, and also north of
that field in the mowed grass area). They moved closer to us in the mowed
area, and all field marks could be seen. As Linda Sparling reported, Blaine
is going to be closed on Monday, August 7 for extensive road work.

During the later morning, I spent an enjoyable time birding with two
Minneapolis area birders at 180th St. Marsh, Dakota County. We found 2
Pectoral Sandpipers, 3-4 Least, 1 Spotted and 3 possible Wilson's Snipe
flying. (They had a snipe shape and long bills). We also saw 5-6 Killdeer,
several Great Blue Herons and 1 Great Egret (I saw at least 10 there several
days ago in the southeast pond). I found 2 Solitary and 4 S-P Plovers there
yesterday. There were also 2 Loggerhead Shrikes on the power lines.

This evening around 5:00 pm, I went up to 140th St. Marsh, which appeared
empty except for 1 Great Egret and two Lesser Yellowlegs. I approached the
marsh from the east (Highway 55 to 145th St., then south on 145th street to
142nd St. (an immediate right turn west). 142nd St. becomes 140th St,
leading to the marsh on your right.

The first birds I saw when I parked were tiny black, fluffy chicks scooting
around and feeding in the mud just below the road in front of the marsh
grass (east side of the marsh). They were Sora chicks, and Mom was there
feeding with them. They disappeared for a while, but reappeared later, with
the female hidden partly in the reeds. There were 3 chicks, but I saw one
other chick much farther out in the muddy area of the marsh, so there may
have been another brood. The chicks had a red mark at the base of their
yellow-orange bills. I watched them busily pecking around for about 20
minutes, and it was a great way to end an interesting birding day!
