Subject: addition to 140th St. directions/ additional birds at 180th
An addition to my last post directions to 140th St: There is no sign for
145th St.on Highway 55. Highway 42 and 145th St. are the same road, so turn
south from 55 on to 42, get in the marked right turn lane, and turn west
(right) on 142nd St, which becomes 140th.
Another way to get to 140th St. Marsh is to exit on 52 at 145th St., go east
for a short distance, and turn left (north) on Conley Ave. This road will go
north, make a sharp turn east (right), and lead to the marsh area. I'm sorry
if my first directions were confusing!
Birds I forgot to mention in the last post: At 180th St. Marsh yesterday
(Friday) was one juvenile Black Tern. with a dark gray back. It had a black
patch behind the crown, which connected to black ear patches. (Sibley). It
later flew and didn't return. I also forgot to mention the Bank Swallows.
The possible Wilson's Snipe we saw briefly were likely Short-billed
Dowatchers instead, which were spotted there by Diana Doyle on Thursday.
Three Buff-breasted at Jirak Sod Farms were spotted several times this
morning. The first group saw them at a very close distance in a dark brown
area of the mowed grass (north of the second plowed field), quite close to
the road, and I saw them late morning with another group of birders farther
back from the first spot. 180th St. Marsh was empty except for one Solitary
Sandpiper and Bank Swallows. The Sora chicks were out (an adult bird wasn't
visible while I was there) at 140th St. Marsh around noon.
I have a question for veteran birders of this marsh. I heard what sounded
like a Virginia Rail (Kidick, Kidick!) coming from the marsh grass while I
was watching the Soras yesterday. Have any been seen at 140th in the past?
