This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, August 11,

Summer is winding down in the northwest, and some species are starting
to get ready for migration. Young birds are growing up, and are less
obvious than even a week ago. However, this week I have heard the
plaintive attempts of the young eastern wood-pewees to sing the "family
song". One has to smile whenever you hear it.
In Otter Tail County, the COMMON MOORHEN family was relocated on Sunday,
August 6 by Steve and Diane Millard and others in the slough along the
portion of CR 67/CR 8 where they run together in northeastern Otter Tail
County north of New York Mills. This is only a very short stretch, and
this slough south of a farmstead on the east side of the road is easy to
find; no better viewing is possible, but the birds are easy to see from
the county road if they are out in the open. Patience is required as
there are many cattails to hide in. One adult and three chicks were seen
on Sunday.
In Becker County on August 6, Shelley Steva and I saw four TRUMPETER
SWANS in a slough north of Frazee, and four TURKEY VULTURES circling
over a field north of the moorhen site.
A TURKEY VULTURE was also spotted in Mahnomen County on Sunday, August
6, just north of Bejou along US 59.
Pat Rice was birding in Polk County on August 9 and found a pothole
along CR 1 near Winger that held BLUE-WINGED TEAL, KILLDEER, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER,
and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Shelley Steva and I found a mixed flock of
1200 gulls at the Erskine wastewater treatment ponds that day. About 90%
were FRANKLIN'S GULLS with a few RING-BILLED GULLS . Dave Lambeth saw a
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER along the bike path along
the Red River in East Grand Forks on August 7 .
At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County , the weekly shorebird survey counted
over 1900 shorebirds this week. One of the best spots at the refuge was
along CR 7 at South Pool.
In Clearwater County, Pat Rice found 4 TRUMPETER SWANS, both PIED-BILLED
GREBE and RED-NECKED GREBE, and AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at Upper Rice
Lake on August 9.
Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 8 GREAT
BLUE HERONS, and 5 GREAT EGRETS at his place near Lancaster on August 8.
