This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, February 3,
2006 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
The mild weather continued this week in the northwest - a little snow
fell gently one or two days, just enough to keep everything white. Road
conditions may be a bit messy on the weekend as we had a snowfall on
Thursday, and secondary roads require caution.
>From Otter Tail County on January 27 and 28, Jeff and Amy Drake reported
a PIED-BILLED GREBE in downtown Fergus Falls. I hesitate to state where
as there is much open water in that town and the bird was moving around.
They also reported a BARRED OWL along CR 14 at Walker Lake Drive about 8
miles west of Richville. Two AMERICAN COOTS were in the Otter Tail River
east of Fergus Falls on January 30.
Ben Fritchman spotted two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS and two PINE SISKINS
in Moorhead, Clay County, on January 29. In Norman County he saw a BALD
EAGLE.
Bruce Flaig in Polk County reports that some GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS
can be reliably seen about 3-4 miles west of Fertile along CR 1. Other
species he reported included BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and SNOW
BUNTINGS. Lisa Newton reported a SNOWY OWL seen along CR 21 two miles
east of Sherack on January 31.
Gary Tischer reported that an AMERICAN ROBIN has been seen in Marshall
County near Agassiz NWR. A few COMMON REDPOLLS have appeared at the
Maintenance center feeder at Agassiz NWR in recent days.=20
Kelly Larson reporting from Beltrami County on January 27, observed BLUE
JAY, AMERICAN CROW, COMMON RAVEN, 23 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Bemidji, and
43 SNOW BUNTINGS. On the 29th, she was at the Mississippi River inlet in
Bemidji where there were 9 CANADA GEESE, 12 MALLARDS, 2 COMMON
GOLDENEYE, a COMMON MERGANSER, and one BALD EAGLE. Lisa Newton reported
9 COMMON RAVENS IN Lee Township on January 29. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was
also seen there.
In Hubbard County on January 29, Kelly Larson found a BLACK-BILLED
MAGPIE along MN 200 near Lake George.
Larry Wilebski near Lancaster in Kittson County found a SNOWY OWL about
4 miles east of Humboldt on February 1. Mark Vettleson observed another
SNOWY OWL four miles south of Lancaster along US 59 on February 2.
Thanks to Kelly Larson, Jeff and Amy Drake, Ben Fritchman, Bruce Flaig,
Mark Vettleson, Gary Tischer, Lisa Newton, and Larry Wilebski for their
reports.
Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. When reporting by email please put "NW Bird Report" in the
subject line of your message. The next scheduled update of this report
is Friday, February 10, 2006.
