Today on a return trip from Nerstrand, I drove on some gravel roads west of
52 in Goodhue, searching for a snowy. After seeing only one bird--a lonely
horned lark--I decided to return home, and drove north on highway 1. About a
quarter of a mile before the hwy 9 junction, where I planned to turn east, a
snowy was perched on a low utility pole, east side of the road. It was about
5:20 by then, and the sun had just set.

The snowy had a lot of dark coloring, especially on it's crown. It stayed
there for a few minutes before flying west to perch on top of a low hill
with the pastel pink sky behind it. What a lovely way to end the day!

I had seen one of the airport snowies about three weeks ago--a life bird.
This owl was much closer, giving me an excellent view--and only 20 minutes
from home!
