Today seemed to be the day of the odd sightings! We drove down to the
Schaar's Bluff area in Dakota County and were looking around for the Gyr
with no luck. But near the Rosemount water treatment plant there was a
rather large mostly open pond filled with mallards, Canada geese and the 3
snow geese. One was a blue goose, the other two were white. I assume these
were the same three written about earlier. I got some photos of them before
the whole flock flew off. I can see in the full size photo that the blue
goose is banded. (He climbed up on the ice.) There is no black on the
wings of the white geese but there is some gray shading.
We drove into Hastings and in the little aerated pond by the river bridge,
there was another oddity among the mallards. It is a very light-colored,
mainly white duck with a cinnamon tinted head. The duck was resting on the
ice next to a male mallard. Took a few photos of that one, too. I'm
guessing a cross with a domestic duck? Has anyone else seen it?
If anyone would like to see photos of the 3 geese and the odd duck, let me
know and I can email them to you.
