We drove through U More Park in Dakota County this afternoon and found a
great horned owl sitting along the side of the road. (A minimum maintenance
road -- we entered off Biscayne.) The owl did not appear to be injured as
it was able to fly but the behavior was odd. It flew down the road a ways
and landed again. Then it flew farther on and landed on the opposite side
of the road. We continued on our way but about 10 minutes later retraced
our route and the owl was still sitting right on the edge of the road. It
then flew across and toward some trees along a sod field and we lost sight
of it. (But it was at least safely off the road!) I have some photos of
the owl and I was wondering if this might be a very young owl very recently
fledged and not yet wise to the ways of the world. Is there any way to tell
from looking at a photo? If anyone would like to take a look, let me know
and I will email it to you tomorrow.
Thanks for any ideas about what might have been going on with this owl or if
this is not unusual behavior.
Gail
