This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 5, 2006
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may
also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Typical spring weather prevailed this week- warm and pleasant one day,
and cold and windy the next. None the less the flowers are beginning to
show in the woods and every day a new migrant appears.

>From Kittson County, Russ Reisz reported that during the last week or
so, the numbers of migrants has swelled. MARBLED GODWITS and TREE
SWALLOWS are to be seen everywhere. TRUMPETER SWANS, AMERICAN BITTERN,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and SHORT-EARED OWLS have been seen, and on April
25, a single SNOW BUNTING was seen in Caribou township in the far
northeastern part of the county.

On April 26, Mary Broten reported an AMERICAN BITTERN along MN 1 east of
the Red Lake Indian Reservation boundary in Beltrami County. On April
26, Pat Rice observed AMERICAN WOODCOCK, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, HERMIT
THRUSH, and CHIPPING SPARROW at their home near Bemidji.

Maggie Anderson reported that three EARED GREBES were found on April 27
at the north end of Headquarters Pool along the autotour route at
Agassiz NWR in Marshall County. On May 2, Sue Braastad found two WILLETS
near the north end of the refuge. There are currently many YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRDS near headquarters.

In Pennington County, Julian Sellers reported five SHORT-EARED OWLS
along 190th St. NW one mile west of CR 10 on April 28.

Two or three BURROWING OWLS were found by Tom Will, Dave Bennett, and
Jason Eckstein near Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County on April 27. The
owls were found in Tilden township on Nature Conservancy land north of
CR 45 and are somewhat inaccessible, requiring at least a 1.5 mile hike
to get to their location. Dan Svedarsky reported a COMMON RAVEN just
south of Pankratz Prairie this week. Shelley Steva found 100 BANK
SWALLOWS at a large gravel pit near Trail along MN 92 in the eastern
part of the county on May 2. Julian Sellers observed two SHORT-EARED
OWLS along CR 21 just west of the Pennington County line on April 28.
and another on April 29 along CR 102 a mile NW of CR 46.

Migs Anderson had a male EASTERN TOWHEE at her home in Detroit Lakes,
Becker County, on April 28.

On May 2, Matt Mecklenburg found a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Clay
County along MN 9 north of Downer on the east side of the road. The bird
was subsequently relocated by several people at this location and along
the county road a mile east of MN 9. At Felton Prairie, Ben Fritchman
found the expected MARBLED GODWITS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and
CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, but there was no sign yet of either the
Rock Wren or the Say's Phoebe. Pat Beauzay found a LE CONTE'S SPARROW at
Blazing Star Prairie on April 27, and at Felton Prairie he reported
BONAPARTE'S GULL, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW,
and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS among others. On April 30, he found a 1st year
CALIFORNIA GULL at the Clay County landfill. May 2, he saw AMERICAN
BITTERN, SORA, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, BROWN THRASHER,
and HARRIS'S SPARROW in the county.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported that as of May 1 , there was a
WHITE-FACED IBIS in southwestern Otter Tail County. To get to the
location, take CR 15 south out of Fergus Falls for 16 miles to 110th St
(see the Rabbit River WPA sign), turn west 2 miles and look on the south
side of the road. Ben Fritchman found the ibis again on May 2, and also
reported GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, MARBLED GODWIT, PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. A WILLET was present along CR 15 a
few miles north of 110th St., and CLIFF SWALLOWS and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS
were also found. On May 1, Dan and Sandy Thimgan found a GREEN HERON,
and on the 2nd a CHIMNEY SWIFT. They report that the rookery at Lake
Alice in Fergus Falls is full of GREAT EGRETS, and DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was found at Grotto Lake on May
2.
