This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 4th, 2006 
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A female CERULEAN WARBLER was found by Jim Lind this afternoon at 
Lighthouse Point in downtown Two Harbors.  The bird was observed in 
the woods north of the lighthouse with a mixed flock of BLACK-
THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLERS, a 
PINE WARBLER, and a MAGNOLIA WARBLER.  If accepted, this would be the 
first Cerulean Warbler record for northeastern Minnesota.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found today by Steve Walczynski at 28th 
Avenue West and 16th Street, just north of Skyline Drive in west 
Duluth.  Jeff Kern reported a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the 2nd 
in downtown Grand Marais near the co-op.  Jason Caddy reported more 
than 70 PALM WARBLERS with smaller numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS 
along the Munger Trail on the 3rd, along with a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.

Jan Green saw a GOLDEN EAGLE flying in off Lake Superior on the 3rd 
at the mouth of the Lester River.  A LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen at 
Wisconsin Point on the 1st.

Nearly 1,900 raptors were counted on the 2nd at the West Skyline Hawk 
Count in Duluth, including 1,707 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.  Several 
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen on the 28th, May 2nd and 3rd, with 
two SANDHILL CRANES on the 3rd.

Recent spring arrivals in the area include SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, BONAPARTE'S GULL, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and WHITE-
CROWNED SPARROW today, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, CLIFF SWALLOW, BARN 
SWALLOW, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER on the 3rd, and LESSER 
YELLOWLEGS and OVENBIRD on the 2nd.
