There was a story on MPR (Public Radio) within the last week or so (All
Things Considered, their afternoon news program - If you want to hear it go
to www.mpr.org <http://www.mpr.org/> and click on ATC, then go to the
archive to find it) about bird migration vs leafing-out, having to do with
global warming. A study found that the leaves really are opening sooner, but
the birds are on their usual trajectory for early to mid-May. Not being here
when the leaves are just opening is putting stress on the birds' health and
viability to raise young when they get to their final destination. They are
not getting enough protein as they migrate (all those little bitty worms in
the tops of trees as the leaves open out). So, they are not only stressed on
wintering habitat due to deforestation, they are stressed here due to
fragmentation and global warming.. If you have not already called your
congresspeople to weigh in on whether there really IS such a thing as global
warming (or not, as the Bush Adm thinks), then please do so, we need all the
folks we can get to make themselves heard.

I get SO excited at this time of the year, love to see all these great
migrants. I AM seeing warblers at my house this week, right on track, but
the leaves are, as Tom and Jan have said, so big it's hard to find them. You
have to really look for their flighty movements in the tops of the trees!
Species I have seen at or near my house this week are: Blue-winged,
Golden-winged, Parula, Yellow, Magnolia, Yellow-rumped, Palm, Black & White,
Redstart, Ovenbird, N. Waterthrush, C. Yellowthroat. Missing I consider to
be Pine, Tennessee (should be oodles of them this week), Orange-crowned, and
should now be a few Chestnut-sided, Blackburnian, Wilsons. Catbirds and
Grosbeaks are here, but no Orioles yet. Only one Red-eyed Vireo so far,
should be lots. Hummers have been back for a couple of weeks already.

On a quick trip to Carlos Avery to try for the Ibis earlier this week, I had
54 species in a little over an hour (including 50+ Sandhill Cranes feeding
in a burned over marshy meadow), but no ibis.

My experience has been the same here in Wayzata (Hennepin County). We have
several large oaks in our yard, and at this time of year they are usually
'alive' with many species of warblers. This year, I have seen only
yellow-rumps, and they have not been numerous.
