I talked my wife into going over to the Weaver Dunes TNC open house today,
and birding in the area. I did have some target birds - Grasshopper
Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Bell's Vireo, Orchard Oriole. We found all of them,
eventually. The Lark Sparrows were quite active and visible in the dunes
area behind the TNC buildings, chasing and displaying their flashy tails.
We also saw and heard several other 'nice' birds - Sandhill Crane, Bald
Eagle, Cliff Swallows nest building, Bluebirds feeding jointly several
places.
Some butterflies were also out - more than I had seen so far this year,
including American Copper, Eastern Tailed Blue, Spring Azure, Monarch, a
Duskywing sp?, Orange Sulfur, and Clouded Sulfur.
I love the sand prairie and dunes there. It is quite a unique situation for
SE MN. Every dune top brings a new view and possibilities. I hope that the
TNC closing the office there does not mean that the restoration work slows
down too much.
