Following Doug Kieser's great report to MOU-Net yesterday, Mark =
Mulhollam
and I went to Lake City and Frontenac early Sunday, and then Lake =
Byllesby.
In summary, we recorded 21 species of warblers, which is about as many =
as
I've ever had, but nonetheless it didn't seem like a great day (more
below)... and we were totally stumped at Lake Byllesby, which gave no
indication that there could be any shorebirds there.
=20
There were an astounding number of Cape May Warblers at Hok-Si-La park, =
but
few or just one of most species, and some strange omissions, like we =
didn't
hear an Ovenbird until we stopped at Vasa on the way home. It seems =
many
birds must have moved on last night, despite the north winds, since e.g.
Chestnut-sided were reported as abundant on Saturday and we only saw one =
and
heard maybe 2 more. (So we're curious to hear if there was finally good
diversity farther north.) We added a Prothonotary (heard only) at Sand
Point. Let me know if a complete list would be useful.
=20
At Lake Byllesby, we tried every one of the few remaining access roads =
from
the north side, and couldn't see any mudflats, no less any shorebirds. =
Doug
Kieser reported hundreds yesterday but did write about the "the rapidly
submerging mudflats"... could they all be gone in a day, or were we in =
the
wrong spot? =20
