This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 26, 2006 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Summer has arrived almost overnight in the northwest, two days after scattered frost was found in the low spots. Leaves are nearly fully out throughout most of the region, and birds are hard to spot. Suddenly there are warblers which seem to be moving quickly, seldom staying in one place for long.

>From Hubbard County, Marshall Howe sent in a report of a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in a remote region of Itasca State Park on May 15. Elsewhere in the park he found a CASPIAN TERN, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, EASTERN TOWHEE, and 9 species of warbler.

Susan Wiste in Douglas County reported a MARBLED GODWIT at the intersection of MN 29 and MN 27 on May 22.

Ben Fritchman reported on a Big Day in Todd County on May 19 during which the group found 133 species including 7 GREAT HORNED OWLS, 12 BARRED OWLS, and an amazing EASTERN SCREECH OWL. Other species included AMERICAN BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, SORA, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the Browerville wastewater treatment ponds, and LE CONTE'S SPARROW.

In Otter Tail County on May 19, Dan and Sandy Thimgan found COMMON NIGHTHAWK, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, and SCARLET TANAGER.

Sharon Stiteler was at Blue Stem Prairie and Buffalo Creek in Clay County on May 19 where she, with a group , found 18 species of warblers.

Donna and Leon Thoreson in Polk County reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, LEAST FLYCATCHER, WARBLING VIREO, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER this week.

Red Lake County sightings on May 21 included LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, 12 species of warblers and BOBOLINK.

Here in the yard in rural Pennington County May 23 a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has appeared to terrorize the rest of the woodpecker clan. Other species appearing this week include LEAST FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, warblers including TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and BALTIMORE ORIOLES.

In Marshall County on May 20-21, Angela Gerend reported BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and MAGNOLIA WARBLER at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, OVENBIRD and HARRIS'S SPARROW at Thief Lake WMA. At Agassiz NWR on May 22, an adult PEREGRINE FALCON was found during a shorebird survey when 18 species of shorebirds were found in the interior of the refuge. A RUDDY TURNSTONE was found by Sue Braastad at Pool 21, and visitors to the refuge saw an AMERICAN AVOCET and a WILLET along CR 7.
