This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, February 2,

The weather has turned more like winter this week, and feeders have been
busy as the many over wintering birds scramble to find food to keep them
warm. A little snow has fallen, making it more white out there, but
still the depth is very shallow.
In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski continues to have 3-5 GRAY JAYS , and
75 COMMON REDPOLLS among the usual species that are coming to his
feeders. Many SNOW BUNTINGS are to be seen along the roadsides. On
January 28, PINE GROSBEAKS appeared at the feeder.
Mary Lou Marchand in Bemidji, Beltrami County, has a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW, and a COMMON REDPOLL coming to her feeder.
Shelley Steva reported a VARIED THRUSH seen at a residence in Pennington
County on Center St 5/8 miles south of MN 1 near Thief River Falls on
January 28. She also saw two flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS on January 29. One
was 2 miles south of MN 1 along CR 22, the other 1.5 miles south of CR
3. A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on January 26 about 3 miles south of MN 1.
I had the rare pleasure of seeing a NORTHERN FLICKER and a GRAY JAY at
our suet feeder together on January 28.
Two flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS were seen by Shelley Steva in Red Lake
County on January 29 north of Oklee. About 200 of them have been seen
regularly along CR 1 three miles east of the intersection of CR 1 and US
59. On January 31 , she found 50 SNOW BUNTINGS and 20 LAPLAND LONGSPURS
near the intersection of CR 222 and MN 92 near Oklee.
Donna and Leon Thoreson reported that they are feeding some DARK-EYED
JUNCOS, about 125-150 SNOW BUNTINGS, and a flock of COMMON REDPOLLS in
their yard near Climax in Polk County.
Ben Fritchman reported a VARIED THRUSH in north Moorhead in Clay County
on January 29. The location was Oakport Township at 608 Wall Street
about 1.1 miles west of US 75. It was feeding in crabapple trees. The
bird was relocated by Pat Beauzay on January 30. On January 29, Ben also
saw a group of WILD TURKEYS feeding on the apples along with two CEDAR
WAXWINGS. Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported a SHORT-EARED OWL, six
AMERICAN ROBINS and a CEDAR WAXWING at Buffalo River State Park.
Gary Otnes reported that he is seeing AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS and
DARK-EYED JUNCOS at his home in Otter Tail County. There are TRUMPETER
SWANS at the "levee" in Fergus Falls.
