Day one of two days scheduled with John Walker and two of his friends, =
from Yorkshire, England.

Highlights:
-Snowy Owl: Port Terminal. Located the snowy owl along some rocks. The =
owl flew out and I found a nice fresh pellet which I kept.
-Northern Hawk Owl: Near Northstar Flooring on Hwy 4 north of the =
Martin Rd. at 1:30pm. We observed the owl make a dive a pulled out a =
small rat. YEs a rat! A large eared, long tail medium size rat about 7 =
inched long. It snapped the head off and flew into the woods behind =
Northstar Flooring out of sight.
-Black-backed Woodpeckers (females) Two locations: 1. 2.6 miles west of =
the east gate on the south side of the road on the Hedbom Logging Trail =
Rd. 2. Sax Zim Bog Area on the NE corner of Overton Rd. and Owl Ave. =
This is a worked out area by woodpeckers.
-Boreal Chickadees: Arkola Rd just east of Owl Ave. and also along the =
Blue Spruce Rd. in the Sax Zim Bog Area.
-Red Crossbills: Two nice males perched up along the Blue Spruce Rd in =
the Sax Zim Bog Area.
-White-winged Crossbills: Arkola Rd in the Sax Zim Bog Area.
-Sharp-tailed Grouse: (4) at the lek on Co. Rd 29 in the Sax Zim Bog =
Area.=20
-Iceland Gull: WI Landfill. A first cycle bird.=20
-Thayer's Gulls: WI Landfill. One 1st cycle. Two adults.
-Glaucous Gulls: WI Landfill. Two 1st cycle birds and one adult.

Other Birds:
-Common Redpoll
-Evening Grosbeaks (Lake Nichols Lake Rd 232 off Hwy. 53)
-Pine Grosbeaks
-Gray Jays
-White-winged Scoter in the slip at Canal Park. Getting close to =
breeding plumage!
-Peregrine Falcon

** Owl Avenue is going thru some changes. I counted 3 swatches of timber =
removed on each side of the road. They do not go very far in but I am =
sure logging is not that far away. Also loggers are removing trees on =
the Hedbom Logging Trail Rd on the county line and looks like they are =
removing trees on the St. Louis Co. side, mostly hardwood trees. The =
Hedbom Logging Trail Rd is in good shape but the surface is a hard =
packed snow/ice covering and very slick! Also despite the report on the =
Duluth RBA about the Gyr, well in the last month several groups, =
individuals and other parties have failed many times in locating the =
Gyr. I am sure its still around but its still a very hard bird to =
locate despite looking in the morning, afternoons and evening hours. The =
best place to look for this bird is in Dakota Co.
