2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a very cold week in the northwestern part of Minnesota.
Bright sun has mitigated the cold somewhat, but generally the
temperatures have been keeping folks close to home. Birds , however,
seem to know that spring cannot be far away, and the spring songs of
chickadees and the drumming of woodpeckers can be heard if one takes the
time to listen.

Beth Siverhus reported a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in Lake of the Woods County
two miles west of Williams along MN 11 on February 9 and again on
February 12. Another was seen 4 miles west of Baudette on MN 11 on
February 11. At Norris Camp, Gretchen Mehmel saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near
the camp on February 9; a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen a mile north of
Norris Camp. Other species mentioned in her report included ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK, GRAY JAYS, and PINE GROSBEAKS.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported RUFFED GROUSE, 4 GRAY JAYS,
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 50 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 1
HOARY REDPOLL at his place northwest of Lancaster.

In Beltrami County on February 9, Beth Siverhus found a NORTHERN HAWK
OWL at mile marker 49 along MN 72 north of Waskish, and a GREAT GRAY OWL
at mile marker 44. On February 11 a pair of BALD EAGLES were seen at
their nest tree south of Waskish. On February 11, there were 9 TRUMPETER
SWANS in some open water on the Mississippi River northeast of Bemidji.

At the Third River on Dixon Lake in Itasca County, Beth Siverhus saw a
pair of MALLARDS in some open water on February 10, and a BALD EAGLE was
seen nearby.

In Pennington County, Grace Mayta reported 15 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the
town of Thief River Falls on February 9.

Steve Dahl reported seeing two GRAY JAYS at his place on CR 1 east of
Plummer in Red Lake County on February 10.

John Dermody observed two AMERICAN ROBINS feasting on crabapples in
Frazee, Becker County, on February 13.

Rick Gjervold was in Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County on February 9
where he saw a female WOOD DUCK, and relocated the COMMON LOON and an
AMERICAN COOT. A BALD EAGLE was spotted in a tree above the Eagles Club
parking lot. John Dermody reported some WILD TURKEYS seen between Frazee
and Vergas on February 11.

In Wilkin County, Rick Gjervold got a good look at a SHORT-EARED OWL at
the Fred Hintz WMA southwest of Rothsay. SNOW BUNTINGS were seen
frequently in the open areas.

Susan Wiste reported SNOW BUNTINGS in Douglas County near Alexandria on
February 10.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Grace Mayta, Gretchen Mehmel, John Dermody,
Larry Wilebski, Rick Gjervold, Steve Dahl, and Susan Wiste for their
