On late Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2007 Joel Schmidt found two
Short-eared Owls and a Northern Saw-whet Owl in northwestern Kandiyohi
County. I relocated the two Short-eared Owls late this afternoon, =
Thursday,
February 15, 2007 but was unable to relocate the Northern Saw-whet Owl. =
I
also found a gray phase Eastern Screech-Owl in the same general area.

=20

The Short-eared Owls were seen several times between 5:40 and 6:15 p.m.
flying and perched in a 217 acre Waterfowl Production Area between165th
Avenue NW and the north side of Henjum Lake in Section 22 of Actander
Township in northwestern Kandiyohi County, 8 & 3/4 miles west and 2 =
miles
south of the Hwy 71 entrance to Sibley State Park.

Directions: From US Hwy 71 - 1 mile south of the entrance to Sibley =
State
Park turn west on Co Rd 40 and travel west 8 miles, turn south on 95tth =
St
NW and travel south for one mile, turn west on 165th Avenue NW and =
travel
west for =BE mile, on the south side of 165th Avenue NW take a left turn =
and
follow the driveway south, just before it becomes a private driveway =
there
is a WPA parking lot on the west side. The first Owl was seen while =
walking
the WPA west toward the hill; the second Owl was seen from the hill in =
the
NW corner of the WPA adjacent to 165th Avenue NW where it is intersected
from the north by Co Rd 113/110 Street NW. The Owl was also seen =
several
times from 165th Avenue NW perched on one or the other of two muskrat =
piles
in the small wetland adjacent to the road.

=20

The Eastern Screech Owl was seen at 5:32 p.m. in the south facing =
entrance
hole of a wood duck box located approximately 13 feet up on a power line
pole.

Directions: Follow 165th Avenue NW west till it intersects with 118th =
St
NW. Turn south on 118th St NW and travel south for approximately 1 =
mile.
The wood duck box power pole is on the east side of the road =
approximately
40 yards north of the driveway to the Van Zee Dairy Farm at 15080 118th =
St
NW.

=20

The Northern Saw-whet Owl was seen on Sunday also from 118th St NW, but
north of where 165th Avenue NW intersects 118th St NW. The Owl was seen =
in
a wooded area on the south side of 118th St NW where the road curves to =
the
west just past the rural church.
