Boreal Birding & Northern Landscapes Festival

  Celebrating Its Tenth Year

  June 1-3, 2007

************************

This coming spring, the Boreal Birding (and Northern Landscapes) Festival
will celebrated its tenth anniversary. Since its inception, exploring the
dynamic and rich northern landscape has been the focus of the festival.
Since its inception, over 150 species have been spotted by participants. To
celebrate this tenth year, the 2007 event will feature more than ten field
sessions/courses and the talents of ten instructors.

In its earliest years, a motivated steering committee helped give the
festival a sense of direction. Creative contributions from multiple
well-known Minnesota birders (including Kim Eckert, Dave Benson, Carol
Henderson, Mark Stensaas and others) played a significant role. Stories
from the early days are abundant including five species of woodpeckers
spotted in one location, canoe-based field trips with inspired but
non-linear paddlers, late snowstorms, and more.

Lake Superior's North Shore and the adjoining Superior National Forest (home
to 155 breeding bird species - more species than in any other national
forest) have offered an unimaginably diverse array of field locations for
exploration and discovery. In ten years, workshop sessions have included:
Wildflowers to Warblers, Owl Outing, Gunflint Trail (full day) Field Trip,
Lake Superior Pelagic Outing, Geology 101, Lima Mountain, and so on.

Throughout its history, the event has steadily built its momentum and
expanded its field-based educational opportunities. The event now takes
place at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota. A series of
field-focused seminars (1-3 days in length) form the backbone of the
weekend. Each seminar offers participants its own unique mixture of field
trips, classroom discussions and afternoon workshops. Participants in all
of the seminars gather together to socialize and attend evening programs
focused on cultural and northern ecology themes.

The talents and hard work of numerous volunteers and guides plus the
curiosity of hundreds and hundreds of participants have made the weekend an
inspiration on many levels. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who has
shared in the journey!
