Sunday I headed north past Red Lake hoping to locate the Rochester  
birding group. My cell phone failed to find a tower and I was not  
able to to contact the group in the field to get their location. I  
decided to enter Red Lake WMA and Beltrami Island State Forest on my  
own. County roads are good but the forest roads are low to no  
maintenance. I would not venture into these desolate areas without 4- 
wheel drive and survival gear.

In Lake of the Woods county
Grey Jay - Cty Rd 77 west of St. Hwy 72, also on Pitt Grade Trail
Northern Shrike - Pitt Grade Trail, alder swamp
Black-billed Magpie - Bankton Trail, Cty Rd 16 and also on Cty Rd 1,  
saw at least a dozen nests
Common Raven - numerous and in pairs, some in flight displays
Pine Grosbeak - Rapid River Forest Road, several small fly-over flocks
Rough-legged Hawk - Cty Rd 16 and also Cty Rd 1, 5 total, 2 pairs  
each hunting over different open fields
Northern Hawk Owl - Pitt Mine Trail

In Beltrami county
Possible Golden Eagle - soaring high and moving fast over open  
stretch on St Hwy 72, several miles north of Big Bog Boardwalk.
Bald Eagle - St Hwy 71, 7 miles north of Black Duck, adult sharing a  
coyote carcass with Ravens
Northern Shrike - St Hwy 71, 5 miles north of Black Duck
