On 2/23 I was out birding with two birders from Kentucky and a birder =
from Japan.
Highlights:
-American Three-toed Woodpecker (Hedbom Rd)
-Black-backed Woodpecker (Hedbom Rd)
-Boreal Chickadee (Sax Zim Bog)
-Snow Buntings (Sax Zim Bog)
-Iceland Gull ( 1st cycle @ WI Landfill )
-Snowy Owl (Port Terminal)
-Bohemian Waxwings (W. Knife River Rd)
-Rough-legged Hawk (Sax Zim Bog)
Other:
-Northern Shrike
-White-winged Crossbills
-Common Redpolls
-Gray Jays
-Pine Grosbeaks
On 2/24 I was out birding with Kent & Susie Beaman from southern =
California.
Highlights:
-White-winged Crossbills (Sax Zim Bog)
-Red Crossbills (Sax Zim Bog)
-Boreal Chickadee (Sax Zim Bog)
-Snowy Owl (Port Terminal)
-Common Redpolls=20
-Gray Jays
-Pine Grosbeaks
* Not a good day because of the strong winds and bands of snow.
The last confirm sighting of the Northern Hawk Owl was on 2/20. On =
2/23-24 I searched for the Hawk Owl several times and I could not =
relocate the owl. I am sure the owl might still be in the area BUT I am =
beginning to think that the field between the Coffee Cabin & Northstar =
Flooring on Hwy. 4 is not being used that much by the Hawk Owl. Also =
with the cold snap we had for several weeks a lot of the gulls at the =
Superior Landfill have moved on. I only counted about 50 gulls or so at =
the landfill on 2/23 and none on 2/24. The ice on Lake Superior is very =
extensive and with no open water nearby I am afraid this moved a good =
majority of the gulls out of the area.
