At 1:00 Saturday, January 13 I finally saw the Townsend's Solitaire in
Afton SP near its 'usual' location. I saw it perched high on a deciduous tree
behind the bench at the south end of the conifer line where it was originally
found. It flew east along the conifers. I followed and just north of the
east/west path (on the path that leads to the shelter) it flew from low to the
ground to a juniper just to the west side of the path. He stayed there for a
minute, six feet off the ground and 20 feet from my location. It was a
beautiful look at this lovely bird!
On to Wabasha County. I did not relocate any gulls at Lake City, let
alone a BL Kittiwake. I'm thinking there was much less open water than when
John Hockema and Dedrick Benz spotted the Kittiwake and Glaucous Gull. All
there was to see were Mallards and a few Canada Geese huddled around two small
openings in the ice.
The Eurasian Collared-Doves (all 10 of them) were roosting high in a
deciduous tree right where John reported seeing them - in Plainview on 1st Av. SW
between 3rd & 4th SW. I saw them at about 4:30.
The Snowy Owl was on Hwy 42 northeast of Plainview, between mile markers
19 and 20. There were several cars stopped to look at it. It flew towards
a farm and scared up some birds, then flew to a pole on Cty. 14. This was
between 4:45-5:00.
