[mou] weekend northeastern Minnesota birding report

Five of us from central Iowa birded northeastern Minnesota this weekend.  
Highlights of our trip included the following:

12 January
   Cloquet
	2 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches at 7:40 am at the Fond du Lac Resource 
Management building.
   Sax-Zim Bog
	15-20 Red Crossbills along Blue Spruce Rd, just north of CO-133
	1 Boreal Chickadee at the same location

13 January
   Palisades, MN
	1 male Red-bellied Woodpecker
	1 Common Grackle
   Risen’s feeders north of Tamarack
	20+ Evening Grosbeaks
   Hedbom Forest Road
	Black-bellied Woodpecker: 1 male at 2.1 miles west of east gate (south side 
of road)
	American Three-toed Woodpecker: 1 male at 2.2 miles west of east gate 
(south side of road)
   Duluth (Canal Park)
	Harlequin Duck: a pair in shipping channel
	Hooded Merganser: 1 female in shipping channel, south of the Lift Bridge

14 January
   Superior NF area
	1 Boreal Chickadee along MN-1, near Mile Marker 299
	Black-backed Woodpecker: 1 male along MN-1, near MM 323
	White-winged Crossbill: ca. 10, along MN-1, near MM 339
   Silver Bay
	1 Varied Thrush at Nelson’s home at 10:45 am
	1 Gray Catbird, same location
	White-throated Sparrow, same location (heard)
   Two Harbors
	1 White-winged Scoter at Burlington Bay
	Bufflehead: 3 males + 1 female, at Agate Bay
   Hedbom Forest Road
	1 Great Gray Owl at 6.2 miles west of east gate (on north side of road, 
flew to south, and then returned to north side)
	1 male Black-backed Woodpecker at 8 miles west of east gate (south side of 
road)
