Laura Erickson and I led a DAS winter field trip today and had a =
outstanding field trip. No fewer than 25 people came along on this calm =
cold day!! We birded the Hedbom Logging Trail Road, Sax Zim Bog, Port =
Terminal and WI Pt.
Highlights:
-Am. three-toed Woodpecker: Hedbom Logging Rd. A male was found by Kim =
Eckert 2.7 miles west of the east gates on the south side of the road. =
Thanks Kim for the phone call!
-Black-backed Woodpecker: Hedbom Logging Rd. A male was working the =
tamaracks close to the road 2.6 miles west of the east gates.=20
-Boreal Chickadees (2-3): Sax Zim Bog on Owl Avenue near the 45 degree =
bend.
-White-winged Crossbill: Sax Zim Bog on Owl Ave near the 45 degree bend. =
This bird perched right along the road and called and sang!
-Northern Hawk Owl: 1/2 mile north of the Martin Road on Rice Lake Road. =
We found the owl behind the Coffee Cabin. The best place to look is =
between the Coffee Cabin and Northstar Flooring. There is a field =
between the two businesses where we witnessed the owl nab a meadow vole =
while hunting.
-Harlequin Ducks: Canal Park. The imm. male and imm female (?) were =
found in the canal mixed in with several Common Goldeneyes.
-Snowy Owl: We spotted this owl hunting meadow voles in the field =
behind the concrete plant on the west side of Port Terminal. We =
observed the owl from the road that leads out to where birders scan =
Interstate Island each spring.
Other birds:
-Evening Grosbeak
-Northern Shrike
-Common Redpoll
-Pine Siskin
* Laura Erickson should have a complete list on her blog called "Birder =
Blog" plus some photos of what we saw! Here is her link to her website =
http://www.lauraerickson.com/ =20
* Big Thanks go to Kim Eckert who shared sightings with us thru out the =
day! =20
* Also no one reported any Great Gray Owls this morning along the Hedbom =
Rd.
