I was at the Prescott Freedom Park location today looking for the previously
reported Barrow's Goldeneye. When I arrived around noon I heard the good
news that the bird was seen by a couple of people earlier in the day.
However, others there at the time did not get on it and nobody could re-find
it. There are a lot of Common Goldeneye in the river and they all seemed to
be constantly diving and moving around. Looking through the trees didn't
make it any easier. It was also pretty brisk viewing since the visitor
center is apparently closed on Mondays. I eventually spotted the bird at
2:30 pm. Once spotted, it was an easy ID and made me wonder why I spent so
much time scrutinizing all of the immature commons to make sure I didn't
overlook the Barrow's. It sure helped to have a side view. Once it turned
away from me it was easy to lose it in the crowd of commons.
The quantity of gulls was way down from when I was there last Thursday. I
only counted about 30 gulls there today. Several people were looking for
the Slaty-backed Gull but I don't believe anyone saw it today.
