Nice to see some birds moving through the area today in spite of the =
snow.
Along Hwy 78, 1.2 mi. south of in Hwy 72 intersection (just north of =
Battle Lake) there were 5 gadwalls mixed in with a flock of Canada =
Geese. They're in a meltwater pond in the pasture W of the road.
At the dam on the Ottertail River on 72 (about 2 mi. W of the =
aforementioned intersection) there were 5 common mergansers (4 male, 1 =
female) and more geese.
Continuing NW on 72 there were 2 bald eagles sitting way out on the ice =
by some crows if you look from the boat launch by the Greystone =
restaurant.
Closer to home, there were 3 common golden eyes and more geese in the =
Dead River inlet near the Walker Lake boat access (E of Cty 14). We =
also had our first 2 robins in the crab apple tree this morning. The 5 =
tree sparrows that visited all last week seem to have moved on.
Anyone looking for a huge flock of wild turkeys can find 40+ most =
afternoons around 5:00 in the field NW of the Cty 14 about 6 mi. West of =
Richville (or 1 mi. East of Basswood). It looks like they're picking =
over scattered manure piles.
