A week of spring weather spoiled us for the snow that arrived on
Thursday. However, lengthening days have told the birds to start moving
north. There are increasing reports of early migrants moving north, and
even waterfowl are starting to show up as the open water areas increase.

Katie Haws sent a report of a NORTHERN HAWK OWL seen on March 6, three
miles west of Baudette along MN 11 in Lake of the Woods County.

In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported on March 10, that he saw
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE dancing near his place, and the first AMERICAN CROW
has come back.

Pat Rice in Beltrami County saw three COMMON GOLDENEYE at the
Mississippi River inlet in Bemidji on March 14.

On March 10, I found up to five SHORT-EARED OWLS in western Pennington
County near 190th St NW close to Carpenter's Corner. On March 13, three
CANADA GEESE were seen flying near the Thief River Falls wastewater
treatment ponds, no doubt looking for open water.

In Polk County on March 10, I found a total of 27 SHORT-EARED OWLS
actively hunting over a 2-mile square around Melo Church along CR 23 in
the western part of the county. Also seen were several ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS. On the 13th, two CANADA GEESE were seen there, as well as one
NORTHERN HARRIER. Bruce Flaig in southern Polk County reported TRUMPETER
SWANS, and the first of the season RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS. Donna and Leon
Thoreson reported that they still are feeding a number of SNOW BUNTINGS,
COMMON REDPOLLS, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, but these have been joined by
HORNED LARK, and AMERICAN ROBIN in and around their yard. A GREAT HORNED
OWL has been heard there also.

Michael Ossler reported that he saw an AMERICAN ROBIN on March 13, and
has been feeding 15 COMMON REDPOLLS most of the winter at his home five
miles north of Detroit Lakes in Becker County.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan found a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE near Battle Lake in
Otter Tail County on March 13. The bird was between the first two houses
on the west side of Oak Leaf Lane which runs along the southwest edge of
Silver Lake north of the town of Battle Lake. The owners of the
properties don't mind if birders look for the bird from the street.
Terry Brokke reported PILEATED WOODPECKER, HOUSE FINCH, and AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH at his place in Fergus Falls. On March 15, Jeff and Amy Drake
saw CANADA GOOSE, GADWALL, COMMON GOLDENEYE, COMMON MERGANSER, BALD
EAGLE, and AMERICAN ROBIN in Otter Tail County. 40 WILD TURKEYS were
seen in a field northwest of CR 14 about 6 miles west of Richville.

35 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen by John Ellis in Wilkin County in the
Rothsay area on March 9. Also seen were 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 10
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and 69 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS.
