Mary and I saw our first kingfishers of the year today at the Black Dog =
marsh. A male and female fishing together and cackling (not cackling but =
the sound is hard to explain) a lot. Also I felt bad for a female hooded =
merganser. The moving white cloud first caught my eye. 18 male hooded =
mergansers had surrounded a single female. They all had the crests fully =
extended and had completely encircled her. She looked stressed and was =
trying to get away. It was not a pretty site. I have watched single =
males go from female to female displaying and finally finding one who =
seems interested. That's very enjoyable to me. But today it looked down =
right threatening. I felt like wading in and saying all right guys lets =
break it up! Also there was a Gadwall there. Two mallard were sitting =
side by side bobbing their heads up and down together. Geese also seem =
to be pairing up. It's a great time for birding!!
