This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

John Ellis found a total of 20 SPRUCE GROUSE on the 17th along Lake
County Road 2. Eleven were seen 3.3 miles north of the Upland Trail,
eight were seen 2.2 miles north of the Sand River, and one was 0.8 mile
south of MN Highway 1. He also saw a flock of 25 LONG-TAILED DUCKS in
Two Harbors near the lighthouse, after seeing six on the 16th at
Burlington Bay. John relocated eight BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS along the West
Knife River Road (CR 231), west of the Homestead Road (CR 42).
Dave Carman and others counted 165 BALD EAGLES and 12 GOLDEN EAGLES on
the 17th at West Skyline Drive below Enger Tower in Duluth. Jan Green
found a NORTHERN HARRIER on the 20th along MN Highway 61 at the Lakewood
Road, and a pair of MERLINS on the 18th along 1st Street in Two Harbors.
Jan also found a flock of ten LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Stoney Point on the
18th. Possibly the same flock was seen on the 19th off Knife Island in
Knife River. A TRUMPETER SWAN was seen on the 18th near Mitawan Lake,
northwest of Isabella. Celeste Kawulok saw two TRUMPETER SWANS today
along the Rice Lake Road (CR 4) at the McComber Road (CR 849).
Carol Tveekrum briefly saw an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 17th
in her yard in Schroeder, Cook County. Warren Nelson found two
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS and an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the
17th along Aitkin County Road 3, 5 miles west of CR 1. Warren also found
a GREAT GRAY OWL along CR 18, just east of the Hebron Cemetery.
