We are writing to inform you of an exciting new opportunity to become =20=

involved in citizen science! Minnesota Audubon is starting a long- =20
term migration and breeding season monitoring program for the =20
Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA) Important Bird =20=

Area.  The results of this program will allow us to track trends in =20
migrant and breeding bird communities for this IBA.

WHO? We are looking for experienced birders to volunteer to conduct =20
bird surveys. If you or if you know anyone else who may be interested =20=

in participating, please forward this message to them or contact =20
Tania Homayoun (homay001@umn.edu), Project Coordinator. If someone is =20=

not quite ready to conduct surveys but instead are interested in =20
participating on a survey team to see how it's done, they are welcome =20=

to participate!

WHEN?
Surveys will be conducted from early to mid April until the end of =20
breeding season (early July). Surveys during migration (about 6 =20
weeks) require 1 visit to a site each week; breeding season surveys =20
require only 2 visits, separated by at least a week.  Surveys will be =20=

conducted from 6 am - 9:30 am.

WHAT?
Participation will require one project orientation meeting, a group =20
protocol training session, a pre-survey scouting session for your
site, and 8-9 site visits.  We will be using a point-count method for =20=

the surveys; the number of survey points per sites will vary by site =20
size.  Each surveyor will be assigned a site for the duration of the =20
season (or take two sites if you are so inclined).

WHERE?
Since this is the first season for this monitoring project, we will =20
survey selected pilot sites including the Mississippi River Gorge =20
(both sides), Hidden Falls, Crosby Farm, Lilydale, Battle Creek, Grey =20=

Cloud, and Spring Lake.

We would love to have you join us. The information we collect will be =20=

valuable for assessing changes to bird communities within our urban =20
landscape.  Please email us of your interest.  We will be planning an =20=

orientation meeting once we have a list of interested folks.  There =20
is no obligation if you are interested in coming to our first meeting.
