Early this morning at Lake Byllesby in Dakota County there were 10 Baird's Sandpipers out on the mudflats. There was also another small group of 4 shorebirds that would not stay still long enough to get in the scope. There were Rusty Blackbirds calling and 2 Sandhill Cranes. During my hour there 3 large flocks of Tundra Swans could be heard vocalizing from a distance then passed overhead with a total of 150+ birds all together. While winding my way back on gravel roads I encountered a mixed flock of 20+ Brown-headed Cowbirds.

Directions to Lake Byllesby in Dakota County
>From the Metro take US highway 52 south to the Hampton exit
which is MN. highway 50/56 for Red Wing/Farmington. Continue
south on MN 56 until you reach Dakota CR 88 in Randolph ( which
is approximately 5 miles). You turn east on CR 88 also 292nd St.E
and Lake Byllesby is on your right the south side of the road. In
.2 miles there is a driveway to your right (south side) pull in go
over RR tracks and come to a gray gate (do not block gate) and
park. Walk behind the gate, across the field, and down the hill
and look for an opening in the trees to look east toward the lake
and mudflats. This is what is commonly referred to as the west
side of Byllesby.There is also another good spot to check
another .2 miles east of this pulloff where you go over the RR
tracks and park near the Cemetery. Walk just east of the Cemetery
and there is an opening that overlooks the bay and across the lake.
These are the spots where the majority of the sightings at Lake
Byllesby take place. A spotting scope would be recommended
since the majority of the birds are out a considerable distance.
