There is a very visible active Bald Eagle nest at a surprisingly
urban location: just northwest of the Cedar Ave. (77) / Crosstown
(62) interchange at the south edge of Minneapolis. The nest is on the
south side of E 58th St. (almost directly above the curb), just west
of 18th Ave. S and less than one block west of the busy 5-8 Club
(corner of Cedar and 58th). The nest (which is rather small and
probably newly constructed this year) overlooks the neighborhood
houses on the north side of 58th, and is less than 50 yards from the
closest ones. There was one adult on the nest and another flying
around nearby over the weekend. This neighborhood has plenty of
pedestrian and auto traffic (and cars parked beneath the nest), and
the birds must be well accustomed to people. It will be interesting
to document what prey the parents bring to the young later this
spring. Thanks to Doris Rubenstein for telling me about this nest.
