This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 4, 2007
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may
also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
Weather is warming up in the northwest, the sun is shining, and we are
looking for migrants. Right now, however, we are in that pause between
the earliest wave and the big push of migration. We are reading
longingly of the warblers being found further south. Thrushes and
sparrows are the most common first of the year birds being reported.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan found 4 WILSON'S PHALAROPES in Wilkin County on
May 3.
Jeff and Amy Drake in Otter Tail County reported YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, BARN SWALLOW, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, CHIPPING SPARROW, and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on April 27. Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on May 2, and on the 3rd they saw WESTERN GREBE
and CLIFF SWALLOW.
Pat Beauzay and the Fargo-Moorhead Audubon group were birding near
Bluestem Prairie in Clay County on April 28 where they found a MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRD. This bird has not been relocated since then so is presumed to
have moved on. Other species seen included UPLAND SANDPIPER,
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, VESPER SPARROW, LARK
SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR. A
ROSS' GOOSE was seen by Ben Fritchman on the berm of the Moorhead
wastewater treatment ponds on April 27. Mel and Elaine Bennefeld saw an
OSPREY at Buffalo River State Park, and a GOLDEN EAGLE at the Ponderosa
Golf Club on May 1.
On April 28, Pat Rice saw LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BONAPARTE'S GULL,
FRANKLIN'S GULL, FORSTER'S TERN, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in Polk
County, most at the Erskine wastewater treatment ponds. Bruce Flaig in
the southern part of Polk County reported the first RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD of the season and also EASTERN BLUEBIRD.
Three GRAY JAYS were seen by Bob Janssen and Dave Cahlander in Red Lake
County at the intersection of CR 13 and CR 18 on April 25. It was
thought that these birds would have left the area by now. Shelley Steva
and I found CANADA GOOSE, TRUMPETER SWAN, TUNDRA SWAN, almost all the
common duck species, EARED GREBE, and AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN at the rice
paddies in the far northeast section of the county on April 28. In
addition, MARBLED GODWIT, WILSON'S SNIPE, BONAPARTE'S GULL, COMMON
RAVEN, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD were seen in the county. A BROWN THRASHER
was found at the Oklee City Park. A BALD EAGLE on a nest was also found.
Pat Rice reported WILSON'S PHALAROPE at the Thief River Falls wastewater
treatment ponds on April 28. Tom Nelson and Jim Hughes found SNOW GOOSE
and EARED GREBE there on April 30. Several PINE SISKINS appeared in our
yard on April 27 for the first time since late last fall .
Marshall County sightings reported by Tom Nelson and Jim Hughes included
AMERICAN BITTERN, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. A group
of Itasca Community College students visited Agassiz NWR on the weekend.
They had good success and reported TRUMPETER SWAN, all the common ducks,
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, TURKEY VULTURE, RED-NECKED GREBE, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD , and BREWER'S
BLACKBIRD among others.
Kelly Larson reported CHIMNEY SWIFTS in Bemidji, Beltrami County on
April 26. On May 2, Pat Rice reported RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBER, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. On April 30 she saw
WOOD DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, and COMMON GOLDENEYE, and found an OSPREY on the
nest.
Lyle and Sally Lauber at Dixon Lake in western Itasca County saw the
first of the season RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on May 3.
In Clearwater County, Kelly Larson reported COMMON LOON, WILSON'S SNIPE,
AMERICAN WOODCOCK, BARRED OWL, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, TREE SWALLOW,
BROWN CREEPER, and HERMIT THRUSH on April 26.
Tom Nelson and Jim Hughes were in Roseau County also where they found
RUFFED GROUSE, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and
HERMIT THRUSH on April 30.
Thanks to Ben Fritchman, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld, Bruce Flaig, Maggie
Anderson, Bob Janssen, Jeff and Amy Drake, Kelly Larson, Lyle and Sally
