This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 3rd, 2007 sponsored
by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was found today by Lars Benson on the
west side of Indian Point in West Duluth. Carol Tveekrum had a LARK
SPARROW at her home in Schroeder, Cook County on April 30th. Another
LARK SPARROW was found by Dave Grosshuesch and others on the 29th near
Agate Bay in downtown Two Harbors. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was briefly
seen in the same area.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen today about eight miles north of Two
Harbors along Lake County Road 2, just north of the East Alger Grade.
Jan Green saw a late dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on the 26th off the
Homestead Road, 0.25 mile north of MN Highway 61. Jan also saw NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, BANK SWALLOW, and BARN SWALLOWS on the 29th, and
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS on the 2nd.
Kim Eckert and Barb Akre found two RUDDY DUCKS on the 28th in the
backwaters of the St. Louis River in the Fond du Lac neighborhood of
west Duluth. They were in a slough along 131st Avenue West and Water
Street. Kim also reports a pair of RED CROSSBILLS still present today
along Snelling Avenue between College Street and West Kent Road in
Duluth. Dave Grosshuesch also reports seeing flocks of RED CROSSBILLS
daily on the UMD campus near the Bagley Nature Center and in the
Lakeside neighborhood of east Duluth. Dave Benson found a singing
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL at Woodland Avenue and Fairmont Street on the
29th.
Other recent spring arrivals in the area include PINE WARBLER on the
27th, HOUSE WREN on the 28th, VIRGINIA RAIL on the 30th, PALM WARBLER on
the 1st, and NASHVILLE WARBLER and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on the 3rd.
