The following was just posted on the Iowa Birds listserv. The Black-tailed
Gull is an ABA code 4 species and is a very rare find. The Saylorville
reservoir is located just west of I35 between Ames and Des Moines, IA.
Hopefully it will be re-found tomorrow with more people out searching.

Thanks to John Bissell for his earlier alert on the adult Black-tailed Gull
I
found this morning at Saylorville. The bird was resting with Ring-billed
Gulls
on the shore north of Party Cove, then fed along the east side of the lower
lake with other gulls (north of the east pullout on the dam), and then
slowly
flew north towards the marina and disappeared. I was not able to relocate
the
bird in 2 subsequent laps around the lake, ending at 2:30 p.m. It was an
adult
in basic plumage, very reminiscent of a small Lesser Black-backed Gull but
showing a distinct, broad subterminal tail band in flight. Other highlights
this morning included 2 Black Scoters at the Polk City W.A. plus 6 more off
the dam (this has definitely been a GREAT Black Scoter year), and the 9 Snow

Buntings mentioned by John at Cherry Glen.
