This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 28th, 2008

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found by Dudley Edmundson on the 27th in east
Duluth at 60th Avenue East and Tioga Street. Cindy Edwardson saw a
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 23rd at East Oxford Street and Roslyn
Avenue. The VARIED THRUSH and BOREAL CHICKADEE at a feeder in east
Duluth were still present as of the 23rd, and those interested in
looking for the birds should call the homeowners (Christina and Dave) at
218-728-0808.
Frank Berdan found 8 RED CROSSBILLS on the 25th at 9416 Congdon
Boulevard, about 0.25 mile southwest of the McQuade Road safe harbor.
Linda Sparling relocated two groups of RED CROSSBILLS in Carlton County
on the 24th at the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center along
CR 5. Sharon Lind found a flock of about 15 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in
Two Harbors on the 23rd at 2nd Avenue and 1st Street. An immature
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was also seen in the area.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL in the Sax-Zim Bog was relocated on the 24th along
CR 7, 0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Road. AMERICAN THREE-TOED
WOODPECKERS and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen by several birders
over the weekend along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) about 0.4 mile
north of CR 133, along the McDavitt Road (CR 213) 2.5 miles north of the
Sax Road (CR 28), and along the Admiral Road (CR 788), 0.1 mile north of
the Zim Road (CR 27). BOREAL CHICKADEES are still being found at a deer
carcass hung in a tree along the Admiral Road 2.6 miles south of the Zim
Road, and at the feeding station along the Blue Spruce Road one mile
north of CR 133. HOARY REDPOLLS are also present at the Blue Spruce Road
feeding station, as well as EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE GROSBEAKS, and
COMMON REDPOLLS.
