[mou] Trumpeter Swan identities discovered

I received this interesting e-mail from Patricia Manthey of the WI DNR about the two neck-banded Trumpeters I saw at the Fond du Lac Bridge in Duluth this week.
 
P38.  This trumpeter, sex unknown, was hatched in 2001 at Lower Ox Lake near Solon Springs in Douglas County Wisconsin.  Interestingly, it was reported at the St Croix Flowage at Gordon, Wisconsin on March 05.  At that time it had no mate, but was with a cygnet (gray neck and head).  We do not know where it nests, but this new report may help us locate it.
68C is a female, hatched in 2004 at Crex Meadows, Dike 5 site.  This bird spent last summer with an uncollared mate at the UW Foundation site SW of Superior.  They're close to home.  they did not nest last year, but appeared to be a territorial pair, so we're hoping to see a nest this year.  we do our first aerial survey in about two weeks and will be checking that area.

Tuesday March 25, 2008 Today there were two pairs of Trumpeter Swans on the St.Louis River at the Fond du lac bridge (MN23). There was some open water on the river...Mostly frozen. (Andrew Webster noted swans here on Sunday 3/23). One bird had a yellow neck band reading P38. His mate had no neck band. In the other pair, one bird had a yellow neck band reading 68C. His mate had no neck band.
