This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Al and Nathan Schirmacher reported a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER along with
some PECTORAL SANDPIPERS in Aitkin County on the 26th at the
intersection of CR 15 and 441st Place. Three SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were
seen on the 27th at the Greenwood Lake boat landing on Lake County Road
2, and a LEAST SANDPIPER was seen in a gravel pit along the Tomahawk
Road (FR 424) east of Babbitt. Steve Weston saw two HORNED GREBES and
heard two LEAST BITTERNS on the 27th at the Floodwood sewage ponds.
Large numbers of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue to be seen in
northeastern Minnesota. David Nelson saw a flock of more than 100 on the
17th along the Stoney River Forest Road in Lake County, and Sparky
Stensaas reported many singing males during the past month from across
Itasca, St. Louis, Cook, and Carlton counties. Many flocks of PINE
SISKINS are also being seen in the area, with recent reports of 50 or
more individuals at feeders in Duluth and Crane Lake.
