This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 31,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been another quiet week in the northwest, but small signs of
southbound migration are being seen. There is some evidence of movements
among some species, swallows are massing as they will leave soon.
Flowers are blooming in the prairies making them very beautiful at this
time of year.

On July 31, Nancy Jackson found several WESTERN KINGBIRDS in Hubbard
County at the intersection of CSAH 13 and CR 109.

Here in the yard in Pennington County, WARBLING VIREO, EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEE, and HOUSE WREN are among the few voices heard these
mornings.

A visit to Agassiz NWR on Sunday revealed that conditions for shorebirds
there are improving. Ten species of shorebirds were seen, all in
relatively small numbers and at a long distance. Most easily seen birds
were at Parker Pool along CR 7, but numbers there were low.

Doug Johnson in Beltrami County reported that on July 26, the first
returning BONAPARTE'S GULLS arrived, and numbers of them are building.
At Lake Bemidji State Park there was a EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and an
AMERICAN BITTERN was seen near Tenstrike.

Larry Wilebski observed a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in Kittson County near
Lancaster on July 28.

Thanks to Doug Johnson, Larry Wilebski, and Nancy Jackson for their
reports.
