1961SpringSeen by members of Dr. Warner's ornithology class on 18 May at T. S. Roberts' Sanctuary in Minneapolis. Another was heard singing but not seen on 30 May just south of Reno, Houston County by Avifaunal Club members.
1965Spring5-9 Frontenac, AEA, BHL, PST, TST, excellent details; 5-21 Minneapolis EWJ (details?); this species is slowly coming back as a breeder in Iowa after several years of extreme scarcity there, so it should be looked for in southeastern Minnesota.
1967Summerone singing male found by Eve O'Leary on 7-15 at Ft. Snelling State Park, Hennepin Co.; seen by many observers until 8-1 2(BL).

1999Summer Third consecutive summer record. Individual originally found the previous fall (The Loon 71:92) seen through 7/8 at Rochester in Olmsted Co. LK.

1999Winter Four individuals reported. Overwintered in Otter Tail (near Battle Lake) mob, photographed late Nov.–1/15 St. Louis (Fredenburg Twp.) NP, seen 12/18 Hennepin (St. Louis Park) fide AH, and another reported on the †Bloomington CBC.
2000Spring Reported from Otter Tail EE, where one successfully overwintered and laid five apparently infertile eggs before disappearing in early May (The Loon 72:243–244).
2000Summer Fourth consecutive summer record. Female overwintering in Otter Tail (The Loon 72:243–244) stayed into early summer (EJE, mob). Nest built (under the valve cover of a propane tank!) and five eggs present on 5/11, but the nest was abandoned and the bird was not seen after early June; no mate documented.
2000Fall Three to five birds reported! Two from Hennepin: 8/13–16 (Old Cedar Ave.) BBB, SLC and 10/22 Riverside Park CF. Also seen during early October in Ramsey (near Mississippi R.) BAF and presumably the same bird 10/23 fide AXH. Lastly, one seen 10/13 Houston (Beaver Creek S.P.) FZL.

2002Fall A remarkable seven birds were found this season. Two first county records in the Northeast: 8/19 Lake (Two Harbors) †JWL, 8/28–29 Carlton (Cloquet) DP, JWL. All south reports: through 8/3 Fillmore (Canton) NBO, JJS; three in Hennepin — 8/11–19 Old Cedar Ave BBB, et al., 8/24 Cedar Lake CBr, 10/26, 11/12 Medina MHL; and another unusual county occurrence 10/30 Chisago (Chisago City) RY.

2006Spring In contrast to only 2 reports last spring, a total of 11 birds was found in 8 south counties. Continuing from the winter season were single birds through 3/14 Freeborn (Albert Lea) and through 3/28 Blue Earth (Mankato). Five others were first found in March: two more in Freeborn (different individuals at separate locations in Albert Lea), Houston (Reno), and two in Hennepin (Old Cedar Ave bridge and Wood Lake N.C.). In early April, an individual was found in Dakota (Hastings); birders refound it through 5/6 (but see summer report). Also reported 4/2–12 Winona DBz, m.ob., 4/17 Olmsted (southwest of Rochester) PWP, 4/22+ Brown (Flandrau S.P.) †JSS.

2006Winter13 First county record 12/27 through at least mid-January Cass (Sylvan Lake) †MCM. Two overwintered (see fall report) in Olmsted OWB, †CMB et al. and one was present “throughout the winter” in Hennepin (Old Cedar Ave.) BBB. Also reported 1/2 Fillmore (Root River Trail) NBO, 1/24 Fillmore (Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center) JWH (different bird?). One was heard for an undetermined period before being identified 2/18, with a second bird 2/19+ Hennepin (Golden Valley) ALD, m.ob.
2007Spring14 South reports included a pair found throughout the season in Hennepin (Golden Valley) ALD, m.ob. Overwintering bird seen again 3/18 and 4/24 Hennepin (Old Cedar Ave.) DWK, PEB; possibly the same bird was found across the Minnesota River 4/28 Dakota TAN. Another overwintering pair lingered 3/4–5/1 Olmsted (Rochester), where a nest with 6 eggs was found by OWB. One was seen sporadically between 3/8 and 5/30 in Ramsey (Mounds View) ph. AXH, and one was heard singing 5/7 Ramsey (St. Paul) JPS. Only north report: 4/14 Mille Lacs (Kunkel W.M.A., no details) ASc, NSc.

2008Winter33 More winter reports than usual. One found in Otter Tail in October lingered until 12/10 †DST. Another reported in November from Wabana Lake, Itasca was refound 12/12 fide JWL. Multiple reports from Washington until 2/7 were all presumably of an individual frequenting a residence since July 2008. As many as 2 were in Olmsted 12/20 – 1/4 †JHD, ph. TGr, JWH, JLO. Another individual present since mid-August was photographed in western St. Paul, Ramsey 1/1 ph. AXH.

All reports: 1/10–2/11 Crow Wing PSP, ph. JPR, m.ob., 12/8 and 12/14 Dakota ph. DDr (noted as “seen regularly in December”, these were the only dates provided), 12/14 Owatonna CBC, and 2/14–15 Houston ph. RMo.
