A "RED-SHAFTED" NORTHERN FLICKER has been coming to Dan and Sandy Thimgan's feeders in central Otter Tail County since the 6th and was reported last on the 21st.
GREAT GRAY OWLS continue to be reported in good numbers from Roseau, Lake of the Woods and Beltrami Counties.
During a December 13th trip from Agassiz NWR through Fourtown, Rapid River and other areas in Marshall, Beltrami and Lake of the Woods counties, Cliff Steinhauer and Hillary Stoltman found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL, seven GREAT GRAY OWLS, two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, PINE GROSBEAK and COMMON RAVEN.
A report from Lake Bronson State Park last week included NORTHERN CARDINAL, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, SHORT-EARED OWL, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, RUFFED GROUSE, and SHARP-TAILED GROUSE.
On the 16th, Bemidji Christmas Bird Count highlights included RING-NECKED DUCK, HOODED MERGANSER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, BROWN CREEPER, RED CROSSBILL, PINE GROSBEAK, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS.
The Fargo-Moorhead Christmas Bird Count was also held on the 16th. Interesting birds reported were NORTHERN GOSHAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, HERMIT THRUSH, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
The Fergus Falls Christmas Bird Count on the 16th may have ended up with an impressive 44 species. Most interesting were BROWN THRASHER, NORTHERN CARDINAL and quite a number of diving ducks on the Otter Tail River.
Tamarac NWR held their Christmas Bird Count on the 18th. MALLARD and BELTED KINGFISHER were the most interesting species reported. Also found were BALD EAGLE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, BARRED OWL, PINE GROSBEAK, EVENING GROSBEAK, COMMON REDPOLL and good numbers of PURPLE FINCH, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and PINE SISKIN.
Other birds reported this week included SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, CEDAR WAXWING, BROWN CREEPER and PILEATED WOODPECKER.
More Christmas Birds Counts are coming up. Itasca State Park's count will be conducted on the 23rd and interested folks are asked to meet at the park's Forest Inn between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. The Detroit Lakes Count will be held on the 30th. Contact Betsy Beneke via e-mail or call 218-847-6681. The Roseau count is also the 30th. Meet at Brandt's Restaurant (Super 8 Motel) at 7:00 a.m. The city of Warren's count is the 31st. Meet at the Wetlands Pines and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary at 7:00 a.m. for a pancake breakfast.
