On June 2nd, Peder Svingen reported seeing the CERULEAN WARBLER at Tamarac NWR in Becker Co. Location is at the dip in the road just before stop #9 on the Blackbird Auto Tour Route. Peder also found at least four LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES at the Felton Prairie in Clay Co., most along the "longspur road".
Also on June 2nd, two HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were reported from the Buffalo River State Park in Clay Co. by Roger Schroeder. They were seen in the prairie area of the park to the west of the old tar road that starts at the end of the picnic area parking lot.
Another HENSLOW'S SPARROW was reported by Eddy Edwards on the 4th at the Odens Waterfowl Production Area in Douglas County just northwest of Evansville. This is in Lund Township. The bird was about 30 yards north of the parking area at the end of the minimum maintenance road.
On June 3, Shelley Steva and Jeanie Joppru birded Clay and Becker Counties. At the Felton Prairie in Clay Co. were UPLAND SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT, VEERY, ORCHARD ORIOLE, WESTERN KINGBIRD, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR. At the Buffalo River State Park, also in Clay Co., they found a FIELD SPARROW. At Tamarac NWR in Becker Co., some birds reported were TRUMPETER SWAN, BALD EAGLE, SCARLET TANAGER, INDIGO BUNTING and the CERULEAN WARBLER.
On June 3, Peder Svingen was at the Crookston sewage lagoons in Polk Co. and found a RED KNOT and a RUDDY TURNSTONE. At the Warren sewage lagoons in Marshall Co. the same day he found eleven species of shorebirds including WILLET, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and SANDERLING. Also present were 132 EARED GREBES and one COMMON TERN. A recheck of the Warren ponds on June 6 found only the RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 65 EARED GREBES.
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, first reported by Karl Bardon on May 23, was relocated by Peder Svingen on June 3rd on Springsteel Island in Roseau County on June 3.
On June 6th at the Agassiz NWR in Marshall Co., some birds reported included RED-NECKED GREBE, EARED GREBE, AMERICAN BITTERN, LEAST BITTERN, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, BUFFLEHEAD, RUDDY DUCK, SANDHILL CRANE, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.
Note also that the office/visitor center at Agassiz Refuge is now open on Sunday afternoons.
At the Old Mill State Park in Marshall Co., Mary Broten reported AMERICAN BITTERN between her residence and the park shop on the 7th. Other birds reported were COOPER'S HAWK, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, nesting COMMON RAVENS and BOBOLINK. Yellow lady's slippers are also blooming!
Both BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (most common) and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO were again reported this week from a variety of spots along the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail. All were seen while feasting on forest tent caterpillars which are abundant in some areas of the northwest.
Other birds reported this week were INDIGO BUNTING, SCARLET TANAGER and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO at the Ponderosa Golf Club in Clay Co.,
