This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Sunday, April 15th, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lakes Area Birding Club. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Migration continued at a slow pace this past week, with temperatures still cooler than normal, rain or snow in the daily forecast and the sun rarely making an appearance. Most lakes remain completely ice-covered except at outlets and inlets. Despite this, birds continue north and we had some new arrivals.

In Otter Tail, Becker and Marshall Counties, GREAT EGRET, PIED-BILLED GREBE, and HORNED GREBES were reported. There was an EARED GREBE in Beltrami Co., along with REDHEAD (only one reported this week). COMMON LOONS were seen in Becker Co. and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS in Otter Tail Co.

Waterfowl numbers and species diversity continue to grow. TUNDRA SWANS were reported in Becker, Polk and Marshall Counties. COMMON MERGANSERS and HOODED MERGANSERS were in counties as far north as Marshall, along with WOOD DUCK, MALLARD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, and COMMON GOLDENEYE. BLUE-WINGED TEAL were reported from Otter Tail Co. on the 13th.

ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported from Polk and Marshall Counties only. NORTHERN HARRIER and RED-TAILED HAWK are becoming more numerous, along with AMERICAN KESTREL. RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were seen in Otter Tail and Becker Counties. MERLIN(S) were seen again this week in Thief River Falls, Pennington County and also from Kittson County. A TURKEY VULTURE was in Norman Co. on the 12th. Ospreys were in Becker County on the 9th with more reported on the 12th. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported in both Pennington and Marshall Counties.

SANDHILL CRANES and KILLDEER were reported from all northwestern counties. FRANKLIN'S GULL and SHORT-EARED OWLS were in Marshall and Kittson County. RING-BILLED GULLS were reported from Becker, Polk and Pennington Counties.

Other spring arrivals reported this week from either Otter Tail or Becker Counties include: YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, HERMIT THRUSH, CHIPPING SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD.

Birds found farther northwest included BELTED KINGFISHER, MOURNING DOVE, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, COMMON GRACKLE, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW.

At the Wetlands, Pines and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in Polk Co., a SWAINSON'S THRUSH and a possible EASTERN MEADOWLARK were reported on the 13th.

Again, thanks very much to the MANY people who shared birding sightings for this report!
