A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was reportedly seen again this week at the Buffalo River State Park in Clay Co. It was singing in the prairie area west of the head of the old park road (chain across it) that is found at the far end of the picnic area parking lot. Also, there are two singing HENSLOW'S SPARROWS at the Odens Waterfowl Production Area in Douglas County, which is northwest of Evansville in Lund Township. One bird's territory is about 30 yards north of the parking area at the end of the minimum maintenance road. The second bird's territory is about 200 yards east of the first bird and is reportedly not as shy and easier to observe.
The CERULEAN WARBLER is still singing on territory at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker Co. Location remains the same since the bird was first found by David Sorgen on May 19th. It is on the Blackbird Auto Tour Route at the dip in the road just before stop #9. The bird was observed from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. on the 21st, singing and moving around on both sides of the road.
During an evening trip this week taken by Jeanie Joppru and Shelley Steva, they reported seeing an UPLAND SANDPIPER along Hwy. 1 about 7 miles east of Warren in Marshall Co. This was near the turnoff for the town of Radium. At the Warren sewage lagoons they found EARED GREBE, RUDDY DUCK, CANVASBACK and REDHEAD.
On the 15th, Shelley Steva found a pair of SANDHILL CRANES with a colt just north of the Polk Wildlife Management Area near Erskine in Polk Co. She also observed a MERLIN near Plummer in Red Lake County.
Other birds reported this week include INDIGO BUNTING, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, CAPE MAY WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and WESTERN KINGBIRD.
Thanks also to Arlene Ballard, Mary Wyatt, Joe Gartner and Eddy Edwards.
