On Dec. 1st, Tom Valega reported a PRAIRIE FALCON near Wetland, Pines, and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in Polk County after taking the turn from Highway 1 east of Warren. The bird was in some trees about 100 yards from the road quite near to the sanctuary. Tom also saw two GOLDEN EAGLES on the south side of Highway 1 a mile west of the intersection of Highway 1 and county road 2.
A SANDHILL CRANE was reported by Bob O'Conner in south Moorhead on Nov. 30th. The bird appeared to have an injured wing.
Shelley Steva reported 20 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and a NORTHERN SHRIKE in far southern Pennington County along Highway 59.
At 3am on Dec. 1st, Tom Frank saw 84 TUNDRA SWANS flying low over Detroit Lakes.
6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 3 MERLINS, and 8 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and a flock of LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen near the Wetlands, Pines, and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in far northwest Polk County this week. Also reported from the sanctuary by Blane Klemek were BALD EAGLE, RED-TAILED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, GREAT HORNED OWL, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, BLUE JAY, DARK-EYED JUNCO, SNOW BUNTINGS, and COMMON REDPOLL .
Reported from Kittson County by Glen Browne this week were NORTHERN SHRIKE, GRAY JAY, PINE GROSBEAK, GREAT HORNED OWL, and RUFFED GROUSE.
From Old Mill State Park, Mary Broten reports SNOWY OWL, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.
From Ottertail County, the Ronningen's report SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and MOURNING DOVE near their feeder. DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, BLUE JAY, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, COMMON REDPOLL, and DARK-EYED JUNCO were also there as well as in many other areas of the Northwest. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS are still being reported throughout the area.
