In snow-less northwest Minnesota, HORNED LARKS made it as far as Red Lake, Marshall and Kittson Counties this week.
At the Roseau River WMA in Roseau County, Stan Wood enjoyed watching a pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on the 21st.
At the Agassiz NWR in Marshall Co. this week, birds reported by staff included a pair of CANADA GEESE on territory on the 20th, a male NORTHERN HARRIER on the 19th, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and a BALD EAGLE. (Two black bears were also observed out of their dens on the 15th and 20th!)
At the Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County, birds reported this week by Bob & Jennie Scherzer included flocks of CANADA GEESE, AMERICAN KESTREL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SNOWY OWL, HORNED LARK and SNOW BUNTING.
At the Rothsay WMA in Wilkin County on the weekend of the 16th-17th, Bryan Newman found GOLDEN EAGLE, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, HORNED LARK and COMMON REDPOLL. He also observed the VARIED THRUSH at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, and a COMMON GRACKLE at a feeder in Erhard, these sightings both in Ottertail County. At the Tamarac NWR in Becker County, TRUMPETER SWANS were present.
