This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 31, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Now that Memorial Day weekend is over, we expect warm sunny summer weather, and so far not a lot of that has materialized. We have had clouds, storms, and wind , followed finally by sunny, albeit cool weather. Judging by the songs in our yards, migration is about over, as the babble of busy migrants is quiet now.

Joel and Lisa Swanstrom made a birding trip over the weekend, and in Wilkin County, they found NORTHERN PINTAIL, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and MARBLED GODWIT at Rothsay WMA.

At Felton Prairie in Clay County, they were impressed by the large number of BOBOLINKS on May 24, and on the 25th, they saw MARBLED GODWITS, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW.

At Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County, they found BLACK TERN on May 24. At Tamarac NWR on May 25, Joel and Lisa Swanstrom observed COMMON LOON, OSPREY, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and MAGNOLIA WARBLER among others.

Danielle Olson at Rydell NWR in Polk County reported TRUMPETER SWAN, COMMON LOON, RED-NECKED GREBE, GREEN HERON, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and PURPLE FINCH at the refuge this week along with many other species.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, a shorebird survey on May 27 tallied 311 shorebirds of 18 species. Most were at Farmes Pool, including a WILLET and two RUDDY TURNSTONES. On May 30, a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was singing along CR 7 within the refuge between the Airport Road and the east kiosk.

From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported on May 29 a pair of nesting RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, and two GREAT HORNED OWL nests, one with two young and one with three. On May 30, he reported a GREAT EGRET on his property near Lancaster.

Thanks to Danielle Olson, Joel and Lisa Swanstrom, Larry Wilebski, and Peder Svingen for their reports.
