Summer has arrived and this has been a most pleasant week in the northwest. Flowers are blooming everywhere and the landscape still retains that vivid green of spring. Young birds of all species are appearing as if by magic.

Beth Siverhus reported that one RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and several CONNECTICUT WARBLERS were tallied on a BBS within the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods County on June 24.

From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported TURKEY VULTURE and UPLAND SANDPIPER near Lancaster.

Pat DeWenter went to the Big Bog SRA near Waskish in Beltrami County on June 20, where she heard singing CONNECTICUT WARBLERS about halfway along the boardwalk. Other species seen there included OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, GRAY JAY, HERMIT THRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, OVENBIRD, MOURNING WARBLER, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County this week, Beth Siverhus found VIRGINIA RAIL, and LE CONTE'S SPARROWS among many other species.

Shelley Steva , in Red Lake County on June 24, observed a FERRUGINOUS HAWK and a MERLIN near Plummer. Other sightings included a BANK SWALLOW, and a LARK SPARROW near the bridge in Red Lake Falls.

Nathaniel Emery reported that GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS are hatching at Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County this week. Other species hatching young included SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, NORTHERN HARRIER, and SHORT-EARED OWL. Elizabeth Almlie reported sighting REDHEADS , RING-NECKED DUCKS, and RED-NECKED GREBES at Rydell NWR this week.

Scott Kahan reported from Becker County this week. He mentioned TRUMPETER SWAN cygnets at Donely/Tillman WPA; other sightings included SANDHILL CRANES, and AMERICAN BITTERN in and around Hamden Slough NWR.

Ben Fritchman reported that there are two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Long Prairie in Todd County. Look for them two blocks east of US 71 north of MN 27.
