This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, February 12, 2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The mid-winter thaw appears to be now over, but more and more bird numbers are showing up in the yards. Most commonly reported are large numbers of COMMON REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS. Much of the snow depth has disappeared, but what remains has been soaked with water so the final melt will be a wet one. The ice has largely disappeared from the roads, except for places where the rain fell on snow packed county roads, and those still require caution.

Rick Gjervold reported from the west side of Lake Henry in Douglas County on February 9, where he saw RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, and NORTHERN CARDINAL.

Andrew Longtin, while in Wilkin County on February 8, observed several HORNED LARKS, many SNOW BUNTINGS, and COMMON REDPOLLS along CR 26 from the Rothsay area to US 75. He also saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK south of Lawndale. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen near Lawndale, and SHARP-TAILED GROUSE near Rothsay WMA.

From Otter Tail County, Brad and Dee Ehlers reported 110 COMMON REDPOLLS in Fergus Falls on February 5. In Glendalough SP on February 8, they saw COMMON REDPOLLS also, and an AMERICAN ROBIN was seen near Zorba's on Otter Tail Lake. A BARRED OWL was calling on the north side of Glendalough State Park. Both Teresa Jaskiewicz and Alma Ronningen reported on the large numbers of COMMON REDPOLLS moving through. Alma Ronningen also saw WILD TURKEYS, BALD EAGLE, HORNED LARKS, and overwintering DARK-EYED JUNCOS.

Mark Otnes saw a BARRED OWL on February 8 in Clay County along the Buffalo River east of the MSUM Science Center on February 8.

Mary Lou Marchand reported 8 TRUMPETER SWANS just east of Lake Bemidji on the Mississippi River on February 9. A BALD EAGLE was seen in Bemidji, and a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS were seen near the hospital off Anne Street. Other species seen in the area included COOPER'S HAWK and PINE SISKINS.

Stan Wood at the Roseau River WMA in Roseau County reported that several HOARY REDPOLLS have been seen recently at the WMA feeder.

Jeff Birchem saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Lake of the Woods County on the Roosevelt Road at Cecil's Landing on February 6.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Andrew Longtin, Brad and Dee Ehlers, Jeff Birchem, Mark Otnes, Mary Lou Marchand, Rick Gjervold, Stan Wood, and Teresa Jaskiewicz for their reports.
