We are settling into the winter routine here in the northwest, going to work almost in the dark, and coming home in the dark, and the species seen are few in number, but very welcome indeed. The winter world would be quiet indeed without the busy chatter of chickadees and nuthatches. They can almost make one believe that the cold doesn't matter.
Katie Haws saw two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS along MN 72 in Lake of the Woods County on December 8. One was in the usual vicinity between mile markers 49 and 50, the other about 10 miles south of Baudette.
Beth Siverhus reported BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Warroad on December 3.
Unusual was the VARIED THRUSH seen and reported by Larry Wilebski in Lancaster as recently as December 4. This bird has been in Lancaster for about two weeks that we know of. On December 5, Larry saw a SHORT-EARED OWL, and a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD continues to hang around.
On November 27, Katie Haws observed a VARIED THRUSH in her yard in Beltrami County. Other birds reported by Katie in Beltrami County included a NORTHERN SHRIKE and two BALD EAGLES near Waskish.
From Marshall County, Diana Morkassel reported 35 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, an AMERICAN ROBIN, and a PILEATED WOODPECKER at their home east of Warren on December 4.
Dave Lambeth reported a female COOPER'S HAWK and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in East Grand Forks, Polk County, on December 4.Sandy Aubol saw 35 CEDAR WAXWINGS, some COMMON REDPOLLS, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE there on December 6.
In Detroit Lakes, Becker County, Beau Shroyer saw a MOURNING DOVE on December 1.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County saw BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Battle Lake on December 7. A late RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD and a MOURNING DOVE were also seen.
Marshall Howe reported 150 SNOW BUNTINGS and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in far western Cass County on December 5.
In Douglas County John Ellis observed 20 CEDAR WAXWINGS and 30 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS near the intersection of CR 22 and West Lake Cowdry Road on December 5.Also seen were 3 AMERICAN COOTS, 4 NORTHERN SHRIKES and some SNOW BUNTINGS.
