The fall season moves along, and the pleasant weather deceives us into thinking it will continue for awhile, but the forecast is for an end to it and for an onset of more seasonable conditions. The birds appear to know it, as the species mix has changed. There are fewer kinglets in the yards than last week, and a few snow bunting sightings have been reported already.

Brad and Dee Ehlers in Otter Tail County reported RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 70 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and 5 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS on October 18.

Marshall Howe saw four SNOW BUNTINGS just north of Dorset in Hubbard County on October 20. Other species seen in the county included AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO.

Bob O'Connor reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE in south Moorhead, Clay County on October 17.

At Erskine in Polk County, Shelley Steva saw two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at the wastewater treatment ponds on October 17.

Here in Pennington County, I saw a GREAT EGRET beside the Red Lake River near Thief River Falls on October 17. Two SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen feeding in the top of a small tree along Johnson Drive near our house one day this week. At the Thief River Falls WTP on October 17 were several SNOW GEESE, three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, both GREATER SCAUP and LESSER SCAUP, RUDDY DUCKS, and an assortment of other ducks and geese.

Lucas Abrahamson saw a TURKEY VULTURE over Holt in Marshall County this week.

From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported a covey of 27 GRAY PARTRIDGE and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK at his cabin northwest of Lancaster on October 19.
